Located in southern Kenya at an altitude of 1,754 meters above sea level, Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the most authentic African national parks and one of the most popular and visited places in Kenya. Characterized by being a habitat for numerous animal species (especially birds: 450 species have been identified), this savannah carpet is the perfect place for an emotional and natural safari experience.

Where it’s Located

Lake Nakuru National Park is located in central Kenya, in the county of Nakuru and the Rift Valley. It is an area natural protected since 1961. About 27% of the area’s surface is covered by the same-named lake, Lake Nakuru.

The park is situated near the town of Nakuru, which is about 100 kilometers west of Lake Victoria and 160 kilometers southwest of Naivasha. The park’s boundaries stretch for approximately 180 kilometers from east to west and 45 kilometers from north to south.

How to Get There

From Milan or Rome fly to Nairobi, which always involves a double landing, at major airports in Oman, Ethiopia, or Tanzania. Some flag airlines that cover the route are Ethiopian Airlines, Safarilink, Oman Air and Skyward Express. The average flight time is between 15 and 18 hours, starting from €500,00 return.

How to Reach Lake Nakuru

Once arrived in Nairobi, you can choose to fly into the small airport of Nakuru (only 3 km from the park) and then take a taxi (around 35 min, €28.00 / $4250 KHS) or continue by bus (around 610 KSH / €5.00 per person). This is definitely the most comfortable and fastest solution.

Alternatively, although the time required is much longer, you can reach the park by land. From Nairobi Airport (18 km), take the bus to Naivasha (93 km; bus departure every hour, around 610 KSH / €5.00) and finally from Naivasha take a taxi to the park (70 km, 1h30min, approximately €100.00)

When to Go? Weather and Best Time to Visit

The climate in this zone of Kenya is generally warm, with maximums around 25 and minimums around 10. The period between June and August remains practically climatically constant and not dry and arid like in other areas of Kenya.

Best Time to Visit January and February, the best safari season; good also from October to December, with few precipitations

What to Bring: Recommended Clothing and Equipment

Always choose layers because at dawn temperatures can be quite low. Wear clothes made of natural fibers, long-sleeved shirts, hats or scarves, sunscreens, and sunglasses, since the equatorial sun is much stronger than ours.

Clothing: lightweight clothing in natural fibers and neutral colors, comfortable shoes in fabric, waterproofs for occasional rain, hat or scarf, sunglasses

Equipment: small luggage (an experience of travel like a safari doesn’t require too many clothes), sunscreen, insect repellent, camera with all the necessary accessories and memory cards, binoculars

Pink flamingos The animals that most gave fame to this national park. A colorful patchwork on the low waters of Lake Nakuru.

Birdwatching is undoubtedly one of the activities most practiced by tourists who come here. Around 450 different species of birds, all to be seen and photographed.

Marabou storks vs Ieans If you’re lucky, you’ll manage to spot this incredible confrontation that takes place around the shore, the Marabou storks against the Ieans, to steal the poor pink flamingos’ bodies

Black rhinoceros One of the kings of the park. A member of the famous Big Five, to be seen and photographed during their hunting habits

Baboons Babbuins everywhere. You’ll find them on car rooftops and even in the hood. For cheerful and unusual photos… but attention when closing the windows or you’ll end up inside the car too

Out of Africa Lookout One of the least frequented points in the park (to get there will be a bit tiring), with one of the best panoramic views and indescribable

Rothschild giraffes There are 85 Rothschild giraffes in the park, which were brought from Western Kenya, where intensive agriculture has greatly affected their habitat.

The Big Five The rhinoceros probably already mentioned, we have to go hunting for the other four: leopards, buffalo, and almost all of them can be found except the elephant

Baboon Cliff Another wonderful viewpoint, where you can stop to rest or have a picnic with view on Lake Nakuru

Makalia Falls Another one of the authentic scenarios offered by the park. The waterfalls are gigantic during the rainy season
